(PRWEB) August 10, 2004 -- Noel Bush, a 29 year old software developer from New York City, has issued a challenge to incumbent U.S. President George W. Bush to engage in a public debate "on the issues".
Writing in his controversial Internet web log, http://bushesagainstbush.com, Noel Bush said:
"On behalf of all Bushes against Bush, I hereby challenge George W. Bush to a debate on the issues, to be held at a time and place of his choosing.
"I'm ready to defend our name against this usurper. I'm ready to discuss the full range of dishonest and destructive policies undertaken by this administration. I'm ready to demonstrate to the viewing public the total extent of this President's failure: even his family is fed up.
This should be a no-brainer (in more ways than one). I'm not a politician, I have no debate experience. I'm just a, you know, person. For all of his famed gaffery, the President will still have an unmistakable advantage over an unpolished "average Joe" (Bush) like me. One or two carefully practiced rhetorical swipes, and all my supposedly detailed arguments should be swept aside like so much liberal detritus. Right?
"I'm ready, Mr. Rove, Mr. Gillespie, whoever arranges these things. Give me a call at your convenience: 646-326-5910."
Over the past several months, Noel Bush has given voice to members of the large extended Bush family who are displeased, to put it mildly, with the policies and actions of the Bush Administration. "Bushes Against Bush" recently updated to a blog format, and has been receiving increased attention from Internet users and the press alike. "Chat with these non-Bush Bushes," wrote the Village Voice. "Feel their pain."
Increasing numbers have done just that, writing both publicly and privately of their disgust at the Bush Administration.
Now, Noel Bush has upped the ante with his public debate challenge.
"I don't really expect to be taken up on the offer," said Noel Bush, who is not affiliated with any Presidential campaign. "This President has hardly ever allowed himself to wind up in a situation where he'd actually have to respond to direct questions. His press conferences, rare enough, are stage-managed to an unprecedented degree--his handlers actually cherry-pick the questioners ahead of time! This guy wouldn't even testify before the 9/11 Commission without Dick Cheney at his side. I realize it's far-fetched to imagine that he would get together with a regular citizen and hash things out. Just too unpredictable, hard to manage. Still, it's worth a shot.
"I'm putting myself on the line, ready for public embarrassment--I just want to find out if the President has any response whatsoever to a genuine request to have a serious debate with someone other than a funded, prime time political opponent. I'll be able and willing to ask questions that no one else can. Unfortunately, I doubt he'll be willing to answer. I mean, I've never even gotten a Christmas card from the man."
Noel Bush's invitation stands open indefinitely, and though he doubts the likelihood of a response, he has published his personal telephone number and email address for the benefit of any Bush Administration officials who wish to inquire into the matter further. The information is:
telephone: 646-326-5910
