The 19-page guide, written by Bridgestar's experts with input from the organization's membership, is designed to help nonprofits recruit the senior executives who are most qualified for positions as well as most likely to fit the organizations' missions and cultures.
The "Guide to Navigating the Hiring Process" is also being distributed via the August issue of Bridgestar's monthly newsletter, "Leadership Matters." "Getting the right people is a challenge -- for any organization, especially nonprofit organizations. Our 'theory of change begins with the belief that leadership matters -- mission-based organizations achieve strong results when they assemble and nurture strong leadership teams," said David Simms, Managing Partner, Bridgestar. "The 'Guide to Navigating the Hiring Process' is an important new asset in Bridgestars portfolio of offerings."
The "Guide to Navigating the Hiring Process" is organized in a step-by-step process starting with the decision to hire. The content includes:
Defining the position: How to begin the hiring process? This section provides strategic questions to scope the new job in your organization plus advice on how to structure the hiring process.
Writing the job description: Job descriptions are not just about defining the role, responsibilities and the qualifications for the position and how that position fits into the organization. Job descriptions are marketing tools, enabling organizations to communicate the type of candidate to fill the role. This chapter offers tips for writing a good job description, job description samples, and a job description template along with insight into the importance of job descriptions.
Screening resumes: How do you prepare for the inundation of resumes? What is the process for effectively screening resumes? This section presents five steps to systematically and effectively screen resumes to select the best candidates for interviews.
Interviewing candidates: Interviewing candidates can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the hiring process -- or the most exhausting. This section explains the process for conducting successful interviews and includes sample interview questions, designed to save time while ensuring organizations identify the right person for the job
Gathering references: Has the candidate oversold his/her experience? Will he/she fit in your organization? This chapter details how to conduct effective reference checks, including how to use a third-party to take references and questions to ask to confirm the candidate's track record, skills and competencies -- especially those that can elicit tangible examples that allow an organization to better understand the candidate's management and communications' style.
Assimilating new employees: The hiring process has not ended just because the candidate accepts the offer. This section discusses key goals and do's and don'ts of helping new employees transition into their new roles.
"Successfully finding and integrating the right person for the job takes careful planning, a structured process, focused job description, and commitment after the person signs on," Simms added. "Bridgestar's guide is designed to help nonprofit organizations understand the process and to execute effectively on it."
