Vipera announces the immediate global availability of its mobile service for smart phones and PDAs.
Vipera allows camera enabled mobile phones to transmit picture messages to other phones as well as to any Internet e-mail account, at a fraction of the cost charged by traditional operators for their MMS service.
Endusers equipped with a Java enabled phone or PDA can register for a Vipera account at no fee. This is done via the Vipera portal at http://www.vipera.com
Once registered with the Vipera portal, endusers can download Java applications (J2ME MIDP) directly to their handheld device. Vipera applications can be downloaded directly to mobile phones using WAP and MIDP provisioning.
Vipera offers mobile applications for picture messaging (MMS alternative), text messaging (SMS / Instant Messaging alternative), news reading (mobile RSS), etc. Further applications, including multiuser games, will be offered by Vipera and by its partners.
From a technical point of view, mobile Java applications use the "Vipera J2ME Client Library" to gain access to the Vipera services. The Vipera services include billing via credit card, e-mail gateway, picture message conversion, etc. The Vipera J2ME Client Library is available in source code form under an Open Source license. Vipera provides an alternative to MMS and other mobile data services offered by traditional network operators.
The Vipera network is built upon open standards, notably J2ME MIDP, SOAP and XML.
"This is a breakthrough invention. Finally our customers can develop and deploy internetworked, multiuser mobile applications in record time. Our integrated billing systems grants our customers freedom of choice regarding the business model they want to apply to their mobile service. Vipera applications deliver a true dynamic user experience" says Dr. Silvano Maffeis, Founder of Vipera Ltd.
