The situation in Iraq is changing daily, with the allied forces pushing ever harder against the Mehdi Army of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. The country is overrun with journalists looking for the latest scoop, and travelers also, are arriving to see for themselves how the people are faring.
Against this backdrop, adventurer-traveler Daniel Smith entered the country via the Kurdish north on June 29th and headed south to Baghdad.
In part two of Smiths journal at Polos Bastards (www.polosbastards.com), he describes his journey from Kirkuk to Baghdad, and the infamous Abu Ghraib Prison.
Two women with covered heads approach me, holding snapshots of their teenage sons" Smith writes, They want me to take photographs of the snapshots, and tell the government that their sons are innocent."
Later, Smith talks to a National Guardsman, who tells him,I joined up for the college money. I didn't think I was going to see kids getting blown up"
Information on how to do this type of traveling is a valuable commodity for those brave enough to venture into Iraq, but unfortunately it is always changing due to the security situation," says Lee Ridley, editor of Polos Bastards. Stories like Daniels are a big help to others, who want to find out the situation for themselves by going there, or for those who want a fresh perspective on the country."
Into Iraq -- A Travelers Journal -- Part 2" by Daniel Smith appears at www.polosbastards.com from August 11th.
