How Do You Get Rid of Giant Sumatran Rats?
...Elementary, My Dear Watson.
I am a writer living in the San Francisco bay area who has just had his first novel published. In "Sherlock Holmes Lost Adventure: The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra," it was my intent to write an exciting mystery that captures the spirit of Doyle with the romance and nostalgia of Sherlock Holmes, Watson and the Victorian era. Everyone has a favorite story and a favorite actor who portrayed this great detective. During my raving over Doyles stories, I was inspired by an adventure slyly alluded to by Doyle in The Sussex Vampire, and decided to finish what Doyle had started.
(PRWEB) August 26, 2004 -- Everyone knows the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Some people even think these characters were real-life human beings. There are even self-proclaimed experts on Sir Arthur Conan Doyles favorite characters deemed Sherlockians and Holmesians. In any case, fans of the deductive master-mind will be pleased to meet up with him again as author Lauren Steinhauer captures the true romance and spirit of the famous duo in the exciting mystery "Sherlock Holmes Lost Adventure: The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra."
Having read and re-read the original canon" of 56 short stories and 4 novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Steinhauer has had a life-long interest in Sherlock Holmes. Inspired by an adventure slyly alluded to by Doyle in The Sussex Vampire, Steinhauer decided to finish what Doyle had started and complete the canon with the worlds most famous non-story.
[Steinhauer has produced a breathlessly exciting short novel that involves Holmes and Watson with an evil genius whose accomplishments dwarf those of ex-Professor Moriarty," explains Roger Johnson of "The District Messenger," the official Newsletter of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. Here youll find science gone mad. Youll meet Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and a descendant of Charles Babbage (no, none of them is the villain). Youll encounter a Victorian computer and the mysterious wisdom of an eastern cult of illuminati. And of course there are those giant rats - yes, rats in the plural. Its a heady mixture, and it would make a grand movie, should the makers of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen be looking for another property. This is not really Conan Doyles Holmes, but it is jolly good fun."
Anne K. Edwards of "New Mystery Reader Magazine," writes, ...this is a tale that will keep you turning the pages, wanting to know what will happen next. You will be reminded of "The Phantom of the Opera" and the terror found in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" as the story takes you to far corners of the earth and down into the hidden passages beneath London. Talented author Lauren Steinhauer has held true to the writing style of Sherlock's earlier adventures so fans of the great detective will find it a fun read. This is a story for any reader who likes a little horror mixed into the mystery, a little one-sided romance for Dr. Watson and several surprises along the way."
In "Sherlock Holmes Lost Adventure," a youthful Sherlock Holmes recuperates from his first great case, destined to be chronicled by Dr. Watson as A Study in Scarlet." Holmes' next adventure, the lost adventure, starts mundanely enough with the theft of a typewriter but for one outré fact: the death of the beautiful supplicant's manservant. More thefts and purloined documents carry Holmes and Watson across Europe on the Orient Express in search of the truth. Holmes and Watson will face arch villain Lofcadio Hearseborne III and Londons greatest terror yet.
Skillfully written with appropriate dialogue and imagery, Sherlock Holmes Lost Adventure captures the beloved quirky characters of Baker Street and the romance of the Victorian era complete with gaslight and fog. Readers will find that getting rid of giant Sumatran rats truly is elementary-as long as you have the deductive reasoning of Sherlock Holmes on your side.

I first met Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson when I was in junior high...After all these years, I was pleased to meet the great detective and his chronicler again in the new series by Lauren Steinhauer that begins with "Sherlock Holmes' Lost Adventure - The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra." Watson may have become a serial Lothario, but the books feel comfortable. And that's a better thing." --Nancy Kamp Mystery Fiction Book Reviews

A pleasant way to spend an evening, but if you must go out, step lively. One never knows what will crawl out of the sewer. Enjoy." --Anne K. Edwards New Mystery Reader Magazine
There was a time when self-publishing oneself evoked some scorn, but many authors today find this the best way to find an audience for their work. A case in point is Lauren Steinhauer who called me one evening to tell me he had written a book based on Arthur Conan Doyles famed detective, "Sherlock Holmess Lost Adventure: The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra" ($12.95, iUniverse) It takes a lot of chutzpa to walk in the footsteps of the great author, but Steinhauer has read his entire genre and it must be said his Sherlock Holmes does the master homage and provides a very entertaining story that takes Holmes and Dr. Watson across Europe in pursuit of a murderer. Beginning with the mundane theft of a typewriter, we soon learn of a new arch villain. The author evokes a Victorian London lighted by gaslight and has written a delightful mystery.
