The New Curiosity Shop announces a new online course - HIV/AIDS and Society: What you should know and what you can do

A recently launched online course aims to dispel the myths and confusion surrounding HIV/AIDS. The course, HIV/AIDS and Society: What you should know and what you can do, aims to promote understanding and encourage informed discussion about HIV/AIDS. The course publishers, Edinburgh based The New Curiosity Shop, are making the course available world-wide from 1st September 2004. The course is led by course writer Sarah Pouezevara, a US academic now based in France, who has many years experience working in Africa and elsewhere. As she explains: When I learned about the New Curiosity Shop, I decided that this was a great opportunity to make HIV/AIDS education accessible to a larger, non-academic population."

Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB) August 26, 2004 -- A need for this course.

As HIV/AIDS becomes once again part of the local, national and international consciousness, there is a need for individuals to know more about how the epidemic affects their society. This course tackles:
• the facts vs. the myths about its origins and transmission;
• identification of attitudes and behaviours that impact on its spread both positively and negatively;
• its social, moral and economic consequences;
• the impact of government policy concerning testing, research, and education;
• the reality of AIDS vaccine research and treatments; and
• the changes in AIDS-affected populations over time and the populations most at risk today.

Not just for medics
HIV/AIDS and Society is a valuable course for a range of people:
• public health professionals;
• educational, medical and legal professionals;
• journalists;
• police and prison staff;
• staff of charities, philanthropic foundations and international donors;
• educators and civil servants in the developing world;
• anyone who may know an AIDS-affected person; and
• anyone who wants to find out more about the origins of AIDS, and its place in society today.

Online learning at its best
The course makes full use of the online learning environment, and unlike other online courses students have access to the tutor, Sarah Pouezevara all times for the duration of the course. Further, the course positively encourages discussion and debate amongst students. In an online course geography is not a barrier, and for HIV/AIDS and Society we particularly welcome people from all over the world to learn together.

When does the course start?
The course will be run a number of times throughout the year. The first run begins on 1st September 2004, and then again on 17th November 2004. Future dates in 2005 are to be announced. The course lasts 9 weeks.

How much?
The course costs 70 (GB Pounds) (approx €105, $130) for students starting in September, and then 85 (GB Pounds) (approx. €125, $155)

What is the New Curiosity Shop?
