You Think Your Job Sucks?
Perhaps you should meet Carl Fellows. Though he exists solely within the pages of Paul J. Barker's spectacular debut novel Timothy's Take-Out, his plight is only too familiar the world over.

Needless to say, it is hardly a match made in heaven. Carl grows to despise his job, but is bound to it by his stubborn sense of duty and a lovely co-worker.
His attempts to channel his negativity into constructive venues meet with little success.
As if the young man doesn't have enough problems, he somehow manages to run afoul of a Satanic cult! Its members proceed to harass him with all the fury of his obnoxious restaurant patrons.
What makes the novel especially intriguing is that Carl himself is no angel; he's self righteous, self absorbed, and opinionated to an exasperating extreme. Somewhere deep within his being lurks a more affable creature, whom few are privileged to meet.
The work was a labor of both love and hate for Mr. Barker, who has toiled in fast food establishments for much of his life and has bittersweet feelings about the business. The original version of Timothy's Take-Out dates from the late Eighties, although it bears little resemblance to the polished jewel available for purchase today.
Mr. Barker currently operates a restaurant deep in the heart of Southern Ontario, that he assures us is the diametric opposite of Timothy's Take-Out. He is married to a woman aptly named Joy, and, while technically childless, does have a six-year-old beagle named Cindy.
