Mark Van Overmeire, a composer, classical guitar player and percussion performer from Belgium, has released his new CD 'Impresiones' on August 10. The Pat Metheny Group and Yo Yo Ma influenced album contains 6 tracks that travel from jazz to world, from folk to classical, from klezmer to soundtrack. "Well, this is just magical," independent reviewer Dave Starns writes. "The best use of effects for atmosphere I've heard in awhile. This is sort of jazz in the same way some of Eberhard Weber's orchestral ECM music is jazz."
"The compositions set on 'Impresiones' portray some of the amazing adventures I had during my 4 year stay in South America," Mark comments. "After returning home I arranged the compositions made during the trip. New compositions were added. The challenge lay in translating a journey of such variety in music."
Mark Van Overmeire started studying music when he was 15 years old learning the basics of drums and guitar. At the age of 17 he entered the intriguing world of composition trying to master the fundamental rules of classical music. At that time, Mark got interested in the exciting rhythms of jazz and studied jazz harmony. He has worked with numerous musicians allowing himself to grow as a performer.
In March '97, Mark embarked to South America for 4 years, enriching himself with impressions of another world. And these impressions just needed to be recorded on tape. "South America... the name alone conjures up an array of breathtaking images," Mark is excited. "'Impresiones' (Impressions) is a musical journey of my stay in this heart-warming continent. I tried to translate some experiences into a musical voyage."
The compositions are short stories, the music as diverse as Mark's travel experience was. "Impresiones" is available through CDBaby.com
