Wazen is a stylish new online store bringing highly unique ceramics and art works directly from Japan to the UK along with a whole new perspective on interior décor. The creators of wazen wish to share the Japanese philosophy of “wabi sabi” with their customers as well as providing an opportunity to customize products in consultation with wazen artists.

The founders of wazen-online met in the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo and amalgamated their diverse cultures, ideas and aspirations to create this unusual store. Traveling across Japan, they discovered artists in remote regions who were creating wonderful ceramics. Through meeting with these artists and listening to explanations of their work they came to appreciate the subtleties of such pieces and the different approach to art that Japanese people have.

“We believe Japan has a wonderful legacy of creating beautifully handcrafted ceramics and artworks using traditional techniques with a modern flair that are largely undiscovered on western soils. It is our aim to promote awareness of these unique items and give individual artists a chance to display their works to a wider audience.”

The site contains information on the artists who create the products as well as the techniques they employ and discussions on the philosophical aspect of ceramics and tableware in Japan. It also provides a succinct introduction to the philosophy of “wabi sabi” that is based on nature and finds beauty in things that are imperfect, incomplete and impermanent. The items displayed have a very earthy feel about them and there is a definite leaning towards organic shapes and textures.

One fascinating aspect of wazen that separates it from other online ceramic stores is the provision of a “Special Collection” where you can customize items to your own specifications through consultation with the artists themselves. Aside from the “Special Collection”, all other products are handmade to order, meaning each piece is an original, made for the individual customer and not mass-produced.

“One of the aims of wazen is to personalize items for our customers. We do this by ensuring all our products are handmade and by offering a customization service where the size specifications of a particular item can be adjusted to suit the needs of your home or office. We offer an alternative to the “throw-away” mind-set that is so prevalent today. Our ceramics are intended to be used in daily life, changing and gaining character alongside their owners."

Wazen-online has overcome the usual barriers of entry into the world of Japanese art and ceramics by having a bi-lingual and bi-cultural staff team. They have established communication and distribution routes with artists in remote and rural areas. Through this endeavour they have provided the UK audience with a unique view into Japanese artistry and philosophy that has previously been a mystery.
