(PRWEB) September 4, 2004 -- Homeowners and those with recreational getaways, especially in those dry, fire-prone areas of British Columbia, may be able to get some peace of mind with a fire retardant product available from Fire Cool Systems in Abbotsford.
Its the same agent that was used to kill fires at ground zero in New York after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is used by fire fighters in the California wildfires in 2003, as well as in Florida and Minnesota, said company president Antony Pagan. His desire to start the company was sparked after the Kelowna-area wildfires, and he's keen on helping people protecting their homes.
A little protection can go a long way from a fire suppression agent, (called Pyrocool) which can actually be sprayed on buildings and surroundings with a garden sprinkler.
We have a product that lets homeowners be proactive in helping protect their properties from fires. It's a system can be used for homes, recreational properties, log homes and even at lodges or resorts," he said. During harsh fire conditions, the systems can simply be attached to your garden sprinkler, turned on and left, just 'set it and forget it,' " said Pagan. As the summers heat up, more areas will become vulnerable, including homes on the forested Sumas Mountain, or rural areas surrounded by bushy areas or grasses. The fires could potentially affect thousands of people, and along with a significant economic impact, there is also the potential for human tragedy, Pagan said. One of the reasons we're doing that is the forest fire fighters not necessarily mandated to protect your home but are there to put out fire, so if homeowner can assist by adding some protection, the firefighters can spend more time putting out the wildfire," he said. As well, by taking some action themselves, homeowners don't feel as helpless in such a situation. Pagan stresses however that they're not encouraging people to stay in the middle of a fire. But if there's an evacuation alert, you can quickly attach this to sprinkler (i.e. on the roof) turn it on and leave. Of course nothing is guaranteed when you're house is in the middle of a raging firestorm," he said. Unlike other mineral oil-based foams that can actually turn into fire fuel if they are left to dry, the pyrocool is light foam that can coat the whole property. You can spray it on everything. It's totally safe and completely biodegrades in about 24 hours," he said. Pagan travels the province selling his products, and is now also trying to get on with B.C. Fire Protection Branch, the B.C. Forest Services and local fire services.
The system works like this: plastic bottle eductors can be filled with the agent, which can then be attached to a garden hose and a sprinkler. As water goes by the eductor, the concentrate is mixed with water, spraying the solution on the property. The fire suppressant product will provide an aqueous solution that will keep down the heat so it will be difficult for the fire to spread. It also comes in a hand held system, used in the same way fertilizers can be applied to lawns with hose-end sprayers, Pagan said. The fire retardant agent concentrate has unique cooling properties: its patented formula dramatically and quickly lowers fire site temperatures, and acts as a fire retardant on buildings and vegetation, Pagan said.
Unlike conventional foams Pyrocool is a multi-purpose agent, which can be used effectively on a variety of fires. If you're worried about the effects of the fire retardant on health or environment, Pagan said Pyrocool has been tested and approved by the Underwriters Laboratory of Canada, is environmentally safe, biodegrades rapidly and won't harm wildlife. Pyrocool has won many environmental awards including the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in the United
States. Home and business owners finally have an option available to help them save their valuable properties," Pagan said.
