Black Women Business Owners Have Their Own Magazine

Onyx Woman Magazine is the How-To-Guide for Black Professionals

(PRWEB) September 5, 2004 -- Ever wonder what its like to be the CEO, have flexible hours and control your own destiny? Well you are not alone. According to a study conducted by The National Foundation of Women Business Owners, women of color are one of the fastest growing segments of business owners. Onyx Woman magazine has become the how-to-guide for these women seeking practical information on how to start and grow a successful business.

Ola R. Jackson, founder and publisher of Onyx Woman magazine, says the mission of Onyx Woman is to guide readers on their journey through entrepreneurship while connecting them to role models and mentors who operate successful enterprises. Black women are each others greatest resource. Many women want to venture into the world of entrepreneurship, but they just dont know how to make it happen," says Jackson.

Jackson, who has been in business for 13 years, says that she is particularly proud to showcase some very dynamic women who show all of us that we can exceed our own expectations and go from struggle to success. These exceptional women are happy to share their trials and tribulations of how they succeeded against the odds in their careers and in the world of entrepreneurship, or how they overcame financial incarnation and entered a world of debt-free living.

Early in the magazines infancy stages, Jackson says she was asked if Onyx Woman was for all black women, her answer was a resounding, NO". I learned over the years that success is a mindset. Every one isnt ready and willing to let go of bad habits, make sacrifices to change their lives and take risks in order to make it happen. When you change your mind, you change your behavior, when you change your behavior, you change your life. At the end of the day, what we all want is a Better Quality of Life.

What Jackson enjoys most about her career as the creator of Onyx Woman is having the opportunity to speak to women across the country about how they too can turn their visions into successful ventures, dreams into reality and passion into profit.

What started as an eight-page newsletter in Pittsburgh has grown into a full-blown business magazine that also addresses the rapidly growing interest that women have in money management and investing. Jackson says if women cant manage their personal finances they wont be able to make the most out of their financial resources relating to their business.

The magazine also includes career advice, family matters and style information (opposed to fashion). We include career information simply because some of our readers still maintain employment while preparing for their exist into full-fledge entrepreneurship. You also cant speak to womens issues unless you address their families. She says that a business magazine for women has to offer different information than those for men. Women love style and they care about their homes, and they also care about enhancing their relationships with other women, so we address the total woman. You will probably never see inspirational and motivational messages in a business magazine for men. We address a lot of personal and professional development. What you wont find in Onyx Woman is, how to get a man, how to keep a man and how to share one. There are enough magazines on the news stand covering that issue. Black women need more information about economic empowerment and self-sufficiency.
