Myrtle Beachs Granddaddy" Unveils Plaque That Celebrates Its Heritage And Contribution To Sports
Pine Lakes International Country Club, The Birthplace Of Sports Illustrated In 1954
Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) September 5, 2004 -- Pine Lakes International Country Club, which began life as the Grand Strand's first golf course, the Ocean Forest Country Club, today unveiled a plaque that honors the history of the course. The plaque notes the course architect, Robert White, was a founding member of the PGA and its first president. It also commemorates the 50th birthday of Sports Illustrated, which was created at Pine Lakes in 1954.
Burroughs and Chapin Board members and shareholders attended and unveiled the plaque. Other dignitaries included Myrtle Beach Mayor Pro Tem Judy Rodman; Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce President Brad Dean; Sports Illustrated representative Garth Rogers; and Carolinas PGA President Robert Harper.
Sports Illustrated was the brainchild of a group of Time-Life executives who chose Pine Lakes as the spot where they would kick back, play some golf, and brainstorm about a revolutionary new magazine," said Garth Rogers of Sports Illustrated. When the first issue was published, Time-Life executive John Marin sent the Pine Lakes staff the premier copy of Sports Illustrated. That issue was framed and kept in the Pine Lakes pro shop for fifty years. Its here on display today. It has been my pleasure to be here on behalf of SI today to honor both our magazine and Pine Lakes International Country Club with this plaque."
Pine Lakes is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Highway 17 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and was designed and built in 1927 by architect White, who was one of the founding members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). A pioneer in turf grass management, White was also the first president of PGA (Professional Golfers Association) of America. Legendary golf architect Donald Ross advised his friend and ASGCA co-founder White on the original design of the course. Bobby Jones visited, as did Gene Sarazen who, at 78, shot his age at the Granddaddy.
In the 1950s, the course was re-christened Pine Lakes International. 2004 marks the 50th year of publication for SI, which is now America's foremost sports weekly.
