Kids in 31 Countries are Cooking for Culture

Despite global violence, a grassroots book emerged with kids in 31 countries telling stories about their favorite country holidays and sharing secret recipes from family kitchens. Its a timely message, one that reaches back in history thousands of years to dispel many misperceptions about people from different backgrounds and faiths.

(PRWEB) September 9, 2004 -- In the midst of global violence, cultural friendships were born in a grassroots book as kids in 31 countries take readers on an international cookout with an eye on something we all have in common-holidays, festival celebrations, and eating! They tell stories about their favorite country holiday, its origin, and share secret recipes from family kitchens. But it is more than a revealing, fun read and cookbook it has a poignant message for today.

At times, these cultural cooking lessons reach back in history thousands of years to shatter many misconceptions about people of different backgrounds and faiths. Just released, WORLD KIDS COOKOUT Celebrates Cultures in a Global Treasure Trove of Festive Recipes" was conceived, edited, and partly written by Lynn Manning Ross. Starting with nothing more than an idea, it took over two and a half years to complete plus the volunteer efforts of many organizations, parents, teachers and their students from around the globe.

According to Ross, Living in a violent world isnt an option or a legacy any parent wants to leave their child. Yet, here we are. Why cant we choose to take at least one step and begin to think of our differences in a new light? This idea does not imply that one must embrace the beliefs of another. What it does imply is to think of anothers culture as unique to that cultures history not a flaw to be fixed.

In researching country histories for the book, I began to see a deep-rooted human characteristic. As global citizens with common ancestors dating back hundreds of thousands of years, we have hardly moved a warring-inch from where we began. Back then it may have been necessary to 'conquer or be conquered. Yet, we are still doing the same thing today. Ancient hominids had an excuse. We dont! And many agree."

If violence has not produced an acceptable solution to our differences over thousands of years, isnt it time to find out what will? WORLD KIDS COOKOUT is a fresh voice where there doesnt seem to be one. It is a small step but it is a step! It offers a new beginning for all of us to learn about and from each other plus a fun family cookout with a delicious international flavor as well," Ross said.
