Americas senior athletes go for gold at Senior Olympics

San Diego senior games, Sept. 11 to 19, attract 1700 athletes age 50 to 97.

SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) September 12, 2004 -- Over 1700 senior athletes including many who are 90 or older will compete Sept. 11 to 19 during the San Diego Senior Olympics, a not-for-profit athletic festival that encourages adults 50 and over to lead healthy and active lifestyles. It is the second largest event of its kind in the country, attracting competitors and teams from as far as West Virginia and Washington State.

New events this year are mens soccer and archery. Returning events are womens soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field, triathlon, volleyball ballroom dance, basketball, billiards, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, racquetball, road race, and shooting.

Also returning are inspirational competitors like Bert Morrow, 93, of Escondido. Morrow, a hurdler, has broken the world record for the 50m, 100m and 200m sprint and 80m hurdles and received the USA Track & Field Athlete of the year award in 2003. I have never felt better," says Morrow. I work out every day and am passionate about helping elders live a healthy lifestyle."       

This is the biggest competition in our events history. We are very excited to provide so many active seniors with opportunities for fun and athletics," says Rick Fultz, Executive Director of the San Diego Senior Sports Festival.

The 17th Annual San Diego Senior Olympics is a qualifier to enter the 2006 California State Senior Games Championships but is open to competitors from novice to expert.
