For the first time, the 14-room Grand Bavarian room from the German Exhibit at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair in Forest Park will be open to the public, on a Compton Heights tour. The 6,000-plus square foot mansion, built in 1894, with seven bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms, was designed by architect Grable & Weber. These private homes on tour range in square footage from 3,800 to 6,500 for the 2004 tour.

"We are very excited about this tour, visitors will be able to see the original Bavarian Room from the German Exhibit at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair in Forest Park," said Beverly Cochran, Compton Heights tour chairperson and resident. "The room was added on the back of this residence after the Fair was dismantled. It contains the original murals, stained glass, beamed ceiling, tiled fireplace and paneling. You will be able to see it as it was 100 years ago!"

The starting point of the house tour is at the Grand Point, located just inside the main gates of Compton Heights located off Grand Avenue, approximately ¼-mile south of Interstate 44 and the Compton Hill Reservoir Water Tower.

Sponsored by the Compton Heights Neighborhood Betterment Association, the tour will offer attendees free 1904 antique trolleys continually shuttling you throughout the curve-lined boulevards. Homes are clustered together, providing easy access throughout the tour should tour participants want to walk or provide their own transportation.

The tour is self-guided and each attendee will receive a tour brochure containing directions, pictures and history of each home and description of highlights along the way. Refreshments will be available at the Grand Point during tour hours through the St. Margaret of Scotland Parish and St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Tour proceeds will benefit the Compton Hill Reservoir Water Tower, Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis, and the Shenandoah School.
The residences in the historic Compton Heights neighborhood are single-family private homes as required by deed restrictions that have been enforced since 1894. Compton Heights was the first neighborhood in the State of Missouri to enact deed restrictions on each property that are still a requirement today. Creative floral arrangements will be shown in each of the private residences based on individual residents preference and their taste as displayed in their home. More than 3,400 people attended the last house tour in the Fall of 2001 - our last two-day weekend house tour.
