Cavco Machine Tool Rebuilding obtains during and after photos of Hurricane Ivan from a customer on Aruba
(PRWEB) September 13, 2004 -- Cavco Machine Tool Rebuilding has obtained 150 photos, taken in Aruba, while hurricane Ivan was passing through. The photos were forwarded by a customer, who told us they've been circulating on the island. A file of the photographs is linked below in PDF format. (You will need Adobe Acrobat to view them. The download is approximately 2 mg. According to our source, Baby Beach was wiped out by 20 foot waves and the hotel area sustained some damage. There was extensive flooding inland and in Oranjestad. One of the photos depicts what is left of the drive-in theater and in another a car that acts as a reference for the huge wave in back of it.
Aruba is considered to be outside the hurricane belt," so it is unusual for it to be a target. There was a near miss in 1999 that damaged many beaches. The Aruba Beach Club Resort lost most of its beach then and it was only in the last year that it has been restored. Prior to that, a source at the island refinery says he doesnt remember any storms that affected the island. However, all in all, Aruba seems to have faired better than other places.
Cavco has had crews working in Aruba for several years. Even without bad weather, it is not all that it is cracked up to be. Machinery that is exposed to the salt air has special problems. Working on a machine alignment one day, you can return the next morning to find the surface has tarnished overnight. We use chrome or clear lacquer, depending on the surface, to beat it back.
The Aruban people are wonderful to work with, but something changes once you work in a place you vacation in. Some of the feeling of being at work lingers, even while youre on the beach and when your working you feel like you should be on vacation. Cavco Machine Tool Rebuilding also has other customers in the Caribbean, including St. Croix which is in the hurricane belt. After Hugo hit there, we called our customer to ask if we could assist in getting their machinery back on line. They replied, What we need now is beds. Send beds."
