Ever wonder where and how Halloween started? This interesting Halloween article is brought to you by http://store.buyhammocks.com/halloween.html and http://cgi.tripod.com/halloween-decoration/cgi-bin/index.pl

(PRWEB) September 16, 2004 -- Ever wonder where and how Halloween started? Ever wonder where we got all those wonderful, spooky traditions and decorations? Ever wonder where the Jack-O-Lantern came from?

"Quite an interesting little story," says Hart Baur, Partner of Nicamaka Distributors, which owns and operates Buyhammocks.com. "It all started in Ireland, of all places."

The history of Halloween decorations dates back to the Irish, who are credited with developing the first Jack-O-Lanterns. The Irish legend tells of a prankster named Jack who once tricked the Devil and was denied entrance to Heaven after he died because of his mischievous ways, and denied access to the Underworld because he had tricked the devil. Jack was in a bit of a predicament. Instead, he was given a single ember to light his way through the darkness. He placed the ember into a turnip, forever doomed to wander with his lantern until Judgment Day.

"Turnips were popular in Ireland, so in actuality, it was the turnip that started it all," continues Baur.

The turnips were then used by the Irish as "Jack's lanterns." The locals believed that all spirits left their graves on Halloween Eve and sought warmth in their previous homes, but were scared away by this image of a damned soul in the guise of a disfigured turnip. When immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins were more plentiful than turnips, so pumpkins it was. The now familiar Jack-O-Lantern had taken its place in legend.

Leave it to the United States to take off and run with it. "We are a country that loves to have fun and Halloween is a big part," says Baur. "It is fun for the children as well as the adults. Halloween and Halloween decorations are as American as apple pie and baseball."

Now at Buyhammocks.com you can get everything you need to make your house the scariest on the block. From colorful Halloween trees, to crystalline figures, to scary and stunning Jack-O-Lanterns, Buyhammocks.com has it all.

"Halloween is a fun holiday, a chance to get a little crazy, so we now offer a great selection of products to allow you do just that," says Baur. "Have a great time. Make Jack happy!"

So, now that you know the history, have some fun with it, decorate it up to the hilt and be the envy of the neighborhood. Make your children proud!
