A new residential community in Arizona will actually be built around an historic recreation park called "Arizona Garden of the Gods."
Granite Park, located in Prescott, AZ, was founded as a private park in 1905. Nestled among 1.5 billion-year-old rock formations, the park encompassed "Tom Mix Lake" along with a commercial campground and novelty cabins. From 1905 to 1939, Tom Mix, the historic Western Hollywood actor, filmed portions of his many movies on this site.
In 1926, a section of the park became "Arizona Garden of the Gods." There, residents could enjoy Arizona's first heated swimming pool, a dance pavilion featuring Big Bands, a restaurant and children's park. On any given weekend in the 1930s, 400 residents and guests would visit the park. It also hosted other events including beauty pageants, visiting bands and various other entertaining performances.
Residents of the new Granite Park community will also be able to enjoy some of the historic amenities. Sun Pine Homes, the developer, plans to restore the old pool and surrounding buildings to use as a community center. For those residents who like to hike, they can stroll down trails featuring two-hundred-foot high rock cliffs and four-foot-wide passages. Some of those trails will connect to Prescott city parks.
