Mathematical Societies Add Up the Benefits of CanIt Anti-Spam Software

The American Mathematical Society and Canadian Mathematical Society are reaping the benefits of near-spam-free environments thanks to Roaring Penguin Softwares CanIt anti-spam solutions.

(PRWEB) January 22, 2004 --North Americas two premier mathematical societies have resolved the challenges of e-mail spam using Roaring Penguin Softwares CanIt anti-spam solutions. Both the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) were deluged with junk e-mail until deploying CanIt solutions.

For both organizations, spam comprised up to 80% of the total e-mail volume. Alan Kelm, Web Services Manager at the CMS, remembered, Some of our users, for whom we host e-mail addresses or aliases, were getting so much spam to the alias that they had their own e-mail administrators block it. Not only was important society mail being missed, but we'd get the bounce-backs, which added to the hour a day I was already spending on the problem."

Nancy Kaull, Director of Systems and Operations, at the AMS, added, Some of our users didnt like the ‘noise of spam, and others found much of the content of spam very offensive. We needed to address the problem, and considered both outsourced solutions and solutions we could run in-house. After evaluating CanIt-PRO, we saw a fantastic improvement."

The CMS chose the standard version of CanIt, which provides a centralized filtering mechanism for all incoming e-mail. The AMS chose CanIt-PRO, which enables the organization to delegate spam control and filtering preferences to individual end-users.
In both organizations, e-mail users are pleased with the solution. Kelm said, Our users are very appreciative of CanIt. Before, the spam problem was doubling every two months – it had an enormous impact on productivity, and our staff feels the office environment has improved with much less offensive content."

Kaull added, CanIt-PRO has been immensely successful for us. Our users are thrilled and so are we – and the support and service from Roaring Penguin Software has been very responsive and knowledgeable."

Based on the acclaimed MIMEDefang e-mail inspection and manipulation software, also developed and maintained by Roaring Penguin, CanIt offers the industry's most complete and flexible anti-spam and anti-virus solution. It can be deployed in any enterprise e-mail environment, including on all Linux and UNIX servers. As a stand-alone gateway appliance, it can protect e-mail environments running non-UNIX servers, such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and Novell Groupwise.

CanIt is available in standard and professional versions as either a software download or on a plug-and-play appliance. CanIt-PRO is ideal for very large enterprises, ISPs, and campus environments, where control and management of the system needs to be distributed to individual departments or users. A detailed case study of the CMSs CanIt implementation can be read at www.canit.ca/customer_testimonials.php. A trial version of CanIt can be obtained at www.canit.ca/evaluation.php.
