What will visitors to Central Florida be ‘chattering’ about this holiday season? The answer may be unexpected: ICE!

This frozen family experience is Orlando’s most unusual -- and coolest -- holiday attraction, hand-carved from nearly TWO MILLION pounds of ice. ICE! is presented by Coca-Cola and Albertson’s and is open daily Nov. 20, 2004 – Jan. 2, 2005.

Inside, guests explore larger-than-life, three-dimensional hand-carved ice monuments and sculptures, including slippery ice slides, and holiday scenes.

Although average high temperatures in Orlando are in the 70s, visitors are given oversized winter coats to wear inside “ICE!,” a 9-degree winter wonderland.

The enormous structure used to house “ICE!” – dubbed “The Florida Fridge” – is cooled to an average 9 degrees. It is believed to be the first structure of its kind ever built in North America. Upon entering, visitors encounter fanciful holiday scenes, including Santa’s toyshop and a tranquil winter forest with a running waterfall. Many of the carvings and sculptures are more than 25 feet in length.

This year, “ICE!” will feature several new or revised areas, including a whimsical castle scene. Inside the castle, three fantastic ice speed slides will beckon the young and young at heart. In response to guest feedback, some elements will return for an “encore,” including a breathtaking life-size nativity carved completely of crystal-clear ice.

“You won’t find anything else like this in the state of Florida’” said John Caparella, general manager at Gaylord Palms. “In more ways than one, ICE! is the coolest attraction in town.”

“ICE!” is the highlight of the resort’s “Christmas at The Palms” festivities, which features holiday entertainment and activities for the entire family.

ATTRACTION DETAILS

“ICE!” is divided into eight breathtaking handcrafted ICE environments:

  • The Grand Entrance: where guests first receive a dose of winter
  • Santa's Workshop: with elves who are busy making toys for good girls and boys
  • Mrs. Claus' Kitchen: brimming with Christmas delights
  • The ICE! Castle: a towering entrance to our ICE! kingdom
  • "ICE!" Slides: kids and adults can race their neighbors down speed slides
  • "ICE" Forest: home of several amazing photo opportunities, including a “running” waterfall
  • Cathedral of "ICE": evokes impressions of majestic churches of old
  • The Nativity: the majestic grand finale, made from crystal clear ice

The attraction is produced exclusively for Gaylord Hotels, hand carved by teams of 40 artisans from Harbin, China. The artisans are from the City of Harbin Tourism and Development Commission, where an annual ice festival draws curious onlookers to the capital city of Heilongjiang Province.

“ICE!” tickets are $16.95 for adults and $7.95 for children ages 4 to 12. Special holiday packages and room reservations are available. Rates start at $189 per night plus tax and include two adult tickets to “ICE!”

“ICE!” is open daily during the holiday season and is accessible on the Exhibit Hall level at Gaylord Palms, which is located at 6000 W. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee.

“ICE!” is just one of the many holiday experiences in Orlando and Kissimmee-St. Cloud this season. Visitors can enjoy holiday themed Walt Disney World theme park shows and attractions, Grinchmas at Universal Studios, and holiday dinner shows at Arabian Nights and Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede.
