Small Company Makes Big Splash With Botanical Dog Shampoo

Created by Washington residents Alexandra DeBoer and Stephanie Bennett, Bark N Bath opened for business in March of 2003, and is now selling its products in 9 states. DeBoer and Bennett, both animal lovers and recent college graduates, decided they wanted to apply their degrees and passion for animals in their own business and started Bark N Bath early last year. What began as a home business with an initial investment of $2,000 has now outgrown the kitchen, and its products are currently being mixed in a larger shop on Bennetts property.

Bark N Baths shampoos are unique because they are made with soap instead of detergents. According to DeBoer, these shampoos are ideal for dogs with irritated skin because they dont produce as much lather, and therefore rinse more easily without over-drying the dogs skin. What makes Bark N Bath even more unique among pet shampoo manufacturers is their disclosure of ingredients, something that is currently not required of grooming products intended only for animal use. Consumers are demanding a higher quality of products for their pets," says DeBoer. They consider them to be a part of the family, and want to know what is in the products they are using on them."

Based on growing demand for larger sizes and a wider variety of Bark N Bath products, the women have created new shampoos and deodorizers, effectively doubling their selection.
