Firm Achieves 100% Voter Registration - Challenges Other SF North Bay Employers to Do the Same
Brayton Purcell, one of the North San Francisco Bay's largest law firms and a major employer, announced today that 100% of its eligible employees had registered to vote in the hotly-contested November election. Senior Partner Alan Brayton issued a challenge to other employers in the area to match his nearly 300-employee firm's achievement.
Novato, CA (PRWEB) October 9, 2004 -- Novato-headquartered Brayton Purcell, one of the San Francisco North Bay's largest law firms and a major employer, announced today that 100% of its eligible employees had registered to vote in the hotly-contested November election. Senior Partner Alan R. Brayton issued a challenge to other employers in the area to match his nearly 300-employee firm's achievement. "It's a lot of work that pays off for everyone. Involved citizens are what make our country work," he said.
Brayton had issued a challenge to his managers early last month to encourage all eligible employees to register to vote by the Oct. 18 deadline. Selise Smith, manager of the firm's Service Department, formed a committee of managers and staff to undertake three voter registration drives during lunch hour in the firm's break room over a six week period.
Tables were set up, patriotic decorations hung, and with John Phillips Sousa music playing in the background, the challenge was on. Mementos were offered on each promotion day and included American flags or red, white and blue hats and custom-made buttons, each with a different "I have registered, have you?" theme. Edible enticements -- a cookie, cake or a root beer float giveaway kicked off each bi-weekly promotion. A handy stack of voter registration forms from the League of Woman Voters completed the registration effort.
Similar actions were taken at Brayton Purcell's other offices in Portland, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles. By the third Tuesday promotion, Smith had achieved 100% eligible voter registration. "We didnt even hope for 100%," she said. Ninety-five percent was the goal." The firm did not ask party affiliation and relied on honest employee responses to tally its figures. The response was infectious," Smith said. Once we started the program, staff members were proud to say they were registered."
Brayton said the firm would be happy to assist other law firms and businesses in the North Bay in setting up voter registration drives in the days that remain until registration closes on Oct 18.
