Defying The Christian Music Formula

Christian music artist Bruce King defies formula Christian music with his new CD release, "Catch Me With Your Grace".

Performing with cello virtuoso Max Dyer, upright bass genius Dennis Whitaker (Houston Symphony), piano prodigy Chase Jenkins and percussion specialist Howard Dierking, singer/songwriter BRUCE KING creates a unique album, Catch Me With Your Grace. KING refuses to conform to the narrow constraints of what is thought of as marketable in contemporary Christian music, and instead hooks the listener with acoustic guitar artistry and intelligent lyrics. Even prior to the CD release, KING garnered attention from the rough tracks on his web site and also from live performances.

"Wow Bruce. what an inspired guitar you have! I've never heard such fresh clean licks and rhythms. And your voice, I can hear those acting classes in your distinct and clear diction - very easy to follow your poetry. God must be happy to have you as a witness!" Kenny Kleinpeter (Album "Louisianna Odyssey" #1 on New Age Voice charts)

KING's journey in contemporary Christian music began about 10 years ago when he first became a Christian. "I heard a still small voice telling me that I was going to write Christian songs. This kind of troubled me since at the time I thought that most Christian music sucked. Fortunately, I found some Christian artist that I liked and I realized that there may be an audience for what I was doing. I also found that people like Nora Jones can come out with a softer acoustic sound and still sell millions of CD's. This reassured me that I didn't have to sound like everyone else to get noticed."

These are the first lines from a song on KING's new album.

I'm a walking contradiction, full of truth and fiction

A dirty window occasionally washed by the rain

Longing for love and approval, mixed up with cruel and unusual

Trying to get my desires and avoid any pain, aren't we all just the same?

These lyrics represent the broader message that KING is trying to bring to his brand of Christian music: that we are imperfect creatures in need of Jesus. "We are all equal at the foot of the cross, and that is essentially my perspective when I write songs. I am just like everyone else, an everyday person making music for everyday people."
