How Prepared Are You For The Flu Season?

Simple steps can help protect you and your family from this seasonÂ?s viral predator.

Besides the flu vaccine, which is in short supply in the United States this year, there are additional measures of prevention that one can take throughout the flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over 200,000 people in the US are hospitalized each year and approximately 36,000 die as a result of influenza-related complications. As the 2004-2005 flu season is already upon us, it is important for Americans to ask themselves one question; How prepared am I? With that question in mind, the next time you sit down at your desk you may want to think twice about the safety and cleanliness of equipment that you come in contact with every day.

The tools that are essential to everyday business operations have become breeding grounds for millions of spores of potential illness causing bacteria and viruses, commonly associated with contracting and spreading colds and flu. Shockingly, according to a study conducted by Dr. Charles Gerba, a virologist / microbiologist with the University of Arizona, some of the most commonly used objects in a typical office environment are home to more germs and bacteria than the average toilet seat – often hundreds of times more bacteria!

For a healthy workplace, individuals and businesses alike can turn to Falcon Safety Products and its Dust-Off® brand of computer / personal electronics cleaning products for all of their cleaning and disinfection needs. Dust-Off comprises an extensive line of cleaning products, including compressed-gas dusters, and more importantly for the flu season, an EPA approved, disinfecting, pre-moistened phone wipe, to help protect and prevent the spread of bacteria and maintain common office equipment. One simple use of the Dust-Off Phone Wipes can essentially rid any surface of bacteria and germs, and continued use can prevent any inherent spread, helping to keeping both you and your family at home virus free.

The Dust-Off compressed-gas duster gives the user the ability to clean the hard to reach places of the office, primarily the keyboard, where food particles from desktop eating build up and bacteria and germs feed. When combined in the fight for a healthy workplace, Dust-Off Phone Wipes and compressed-gas dusters are the essential tools to promote the healthy workplace that office professionals deserve.

“Dr. Gerba’s study further underscores the dramatic need for a solution to the problem of less than sanitary workplace conditions,” said Ken Newman, Product Manager of Computer and Office Brands for Falcon. “We are proud to offer a distinct line of products under the Dust-Off brand, that represent exactly that solution, as they are specially geared toward keeping a clean, healthy and productive environment both at home and the workplace,” concluded Newman.

The study, conducted from over 7,000 samples, from numerous offices throughout the United States, pinpointed the most unsanitary areas of the average office. In terms of germs per square inch, the top four, in order of most defiled, are the phone, with an average bacteria count (ABC) of 25,127, the desktop, with an ABC of 20,961, the keyboard, with a 3,295 ABC, and mouse, with an ABC of 1,676. Most surprising in regard to the study, is that the toilet seat, thought of having the most bacteria, was found to be exceptionally clean with only 49 germs per square inch. It is quite disturbing to know that the phone you hold to your ear contains 500 times as many bacteria as the toilet seat.

Continuous daily exposure to bacteria of this magnitude will undoubtedly have an effect on productivity and performance as potential illnesses, such as the flu, can easily spread in environments found in the offices sampled in the study. Using Dust-Off at home in addition to the office, is an additional step that Americans can take to protect themselves as well as safeguard their families throughout the upcoming flu season.
