New Online Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction Company Fills a Gap in N Child Left Behind" Implementation

YourOtherTeacher.com, Inc. was founded in 2002. Its corporate mission is to create a centralized portal where students can overcome difficult subjects, increase knowledge, and make learning easier

Arroyo Grande, CA (PRWEB) October 20, 2004 - The No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 has been criticized for a number of gaps in its provision of services designed to ensure that all students receive a high quality education. Perhaps the largest of those gaps is the result of the NCLBs limitation to Title I schools. Only about half of all public schools receive funding under Title I—meaning that almost half of the nations public schools arent covered by No Child Left Behind.

Some critics argue that this is just another example of middle-class crunch. Children from the richest families receive the best education because their parents can afford it. Children in poverty receive supplemental education support through NCLB. Families in the middle are left to struggle on their own to get the best for their children. With a sluggish economy leaving middle-class families wallets squeezed, these families are looking for economical solutions to their childrens educational needs.

Not surprisingly, the Internet has struck some enterprising education professionals as a fertile ground for developing services to fill those needs. YourOtherTeacher.com is one such new start-up. Founded by a college engineering instructor, YourOtherTeacher.com targets students from K-12 and at the college level, in a wide variety of subjects: math, engineering, science, reading, English and Spanish language skills, the California High School Exit Exam, and other subjects.

The basic idea is simple," says founder Jeff Jones, an engineering professor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California. Provide substantial content using the technology to make it fast, easy and convenient. Were not about flashy animations."

Although some critics argue that online instruction is merely trendy, Jones insists its the most practical and efficient option. YourOtherTeacher.com aims to provide the highest quality content in a format thats convenient and, compared to traveling to a land-based learning center, relatively inexpensive. We really want to put high-quality tutoring within the reach of those students who are traditionally ignored by legislation like No Child Left Behind."

Rosalie Mendez, whos running a number of math courses for YourOtherTeacher.com, agrees. Many of the middle-class students I work with are as badly in need of supplemental instruction as students from the poorest neighborhoods. Because an online service like ours is more efficient than a brick-and-mortar learning center, we can offer services at a rate that those middle-class families can afford. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to know Im helping students who might not be able to get assistance otherwise."
