Mortus Illumina is an independent British feature film shot on a minuscule budget of £35'000. So far it has taken the filmmakers (5YLAC Films) 3 years to complete. They are now at the final hurdle as they work towards a post production deadline to get the film ready for next years Cannes festival 2005.
The film is about a girl called Mary who sells her soul for five years worth of happiness, but when it comes to pay takes refuge in a convent, unaware that her soul holds the key to the destruction or survival of the deadlights realm, a world that exists between this and the next.
The Story is a mixture of Live Action, Animation and puppetry, at the heart of this is a 12ft by 8ft giant puppet theatre, built from reclaimed wood that serves as the main story telling vehicle for the film.
The problem is the theatre is just too big for the filmmakers to store now that filming is over and they are not keen to see it destroyed.
"It would be a shame, as over 200 man-hours went into making the theatre and you really have to see it to believe the amount of detail that went into it. Unfortunately space is a major issue and if we don't find a home for it soon, then it looks like it will be at the bottom of the fire for Guy FawkesNight"
The Theatre was built by Frome Resident Eddie Young, who has built several of the key props for Mortus Illumina and created the animated sequences for the film.
"There was a bit of a spinal tap incident in regards to the dimensions, it should of only been 12 by 8 inches " Jokes Eddie Young, "It was a real challenge to build the theatre, especially due to the constraints of low budget filmmaking. On a large film they would probably have a budget running into the thousands for the theatre, we had a budget of £2000 for all the props in the whole film ! Hence the theatre being made from whatever we could get our hands on "
The Theatre (with working lights!) is currently based in Frome. 5YLAC films want to offer the theatre free for anyone who can make a good home for it.
The Filmmakers are currently in the process of migrating websites but some information about the film can be found here http://www.5ylac.s5.com and pictures of the theatre can be found here http://public.fotki.com/chance1234/5mortus_illumina/
