Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 21, 2004 Â With entertainment industry moguls such as Sean ÂP. Diddy CombsÂ, Andre 3000, and Russell Simmons seeking to mobilize young voters in this election cycle, a new handbook helps fill in the blanks by educating the Hip Hop Generation about how they can increase their political power in the U.S on November 2 and beyond.
The Political Action Handbook: A How To Guide For The Hip Hop Generation, written by Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, targets those 18-40 year-old members of the Hip Hop Generation (H2G) who want to learn how they can empower themselves, their families, and communities.
ÂI wrote this book because I thought there was too much important information being left out of civics education courses and the current popular focus on registering and getting young people out to vote, said Rockeymoore.
ÂEvery four years politicians and advocates urge young people to vote but then disappear as soon as the election is over, Rockeymoore says. ÂWhile I believe it will be the Hip Hop Generation that will select the next President of the United States, itÂs time to get beyond simply pimping our vote to a 24-7 political action strategy that will make a positive difference.Â
In the bookÂs foreword, University of Pennsylvania Professor Michael Eric Dyson writes, ÂIt should be obvious that one neednÂt be a member of the hip hop generation to learn from RockeymooreÂs wise and thoughtful book. Anyone whoÂs interested in making the ideals and principles of democracy a living reality can benefit from using this handbook of political action.Â
Rockeymoore is a member of the Hip Hop Generation and a noted policy analyst, activist and political scientist. Currently Vice President of Research and Programs at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Maya has also served as a Senior Resident Scholar at the National Urban League, as Chief of Staff to Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) and as Democratic Staff on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
