Submissions are now being accepted for the second Dark Romance Anthology. This is the second commercial print anthology featuring stories by members of the Dark Romance Novel Group. Submissions close November 30.
The Dark Romance Novel Group is committed to pushing the limits of the romance genre as defined by large commercial publishers like Avon, Berkley/Jove, Signet, etc. Dark Romances violate the romance "formula" as required in order to tell a great love story. For example, the characters may not always be well balanced. The conflicts between characters are rarely easy to resolve. Issues like infidelity, abuse, and death may well be addressed and the words "happily ever after" are occasionally redefined.
Dark Romance Anthologies showcase tales of true love that feature serious themes and complex characters. Stories range in sub-genre from contemporary and historical romance to science fiction, fantasy and paranormal romance.
Nancy Fulton, a founder of the Dark Romance Novel Group and publisher of the anthology, says, "I began reading romance novels as a teenager. I loved them because they told stories about women in real danger, loving real men, finding real solutions to real problems. The heroes ranged from wicked and passionate to intelligent and aloof. The settings extended from pirate ships and drawing rooms to hospitals and starships. Time periods and locations exerted some impact on the behavior of the characters and the events in the plot. In the last decade or so I have seen these homogenized romances come to dominate the market. The plots have become contrived, the characters wooden, and the settings little more than window dressing. By publishing the Dark Romance Anthologies I hope to connect readers to authors who write more sophisticated romances."
