U4EA Provides Advanced SLA Management of Converged Applications on Broadband and Multi-service Networks in Ericsson HL 950

service network embedded software provider, extended its industry leadership today. The company unveiled its new GoS 2.0™ embeddable software that effectively manages network congestion and guarantees quality of service (QoS). This proven software provides a means for network access and edge original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Ericsson, to quickly integrate major advances in service assurance and service level agreement (SLA) management for converged applications on multi-service networks.

Addressing the growing voice over IP (VoIP) market, Ericsson was seeking a dynamic QoS solution to enable management of multiple IP services across a single access network. U4EA’s GoS 2.0 technology was incorporated into Ericsson’s HL950 multi-service access device to ensure that real-time applications their customers want to deliver really work.

“Our leading-edge QoS technology gives Ericsson a major competitive advantage as service providers move toward provisioning triple-play networks. We focus on delivering the technology that lets network equipment vendors significantly shorten their time-to-market of effective, integrated access devices,” said Columb Harrington, chief executive officer at U4EA Technologies Limited. “As service providers offer multi-service applications like VoIP, video and data on a multi-service network, the ability to predict and guarantee QoS grows significantly in importance. We will continue to provide the technology to OEMs that ultimately helps service providers maximize the efficiency of their networks and revenue potential.”

GoS 2.0 was designed for real-time, converged applications such IP telephony, interactive video and other types of mission-critical traffic. The embedded software provides a simple and effective means of sharing limited bandwidth and guaranteeing QoS levels. It protects against unreliable application performance due to packet overload and efficiently prioritizes network traffic according to its sensitivity to loss and delay.

GoS 2.0 has very recently been tested by Tolly Group engineers and was found to provide predictable latency control while guaranteeing QoS for multiple converged applications. GoS 2.0 was also found to assure network scalability without over-provisioning, delivering 100% link utilization while preserving quality traffic and to mitigate starvation and ensure the robustness in “bursty” network environments. The Tolly results concluded that GoS 2.0 represents a fundamental advance in QoS

U4EA Technologies’ GoS 2.0 protects, prioritizes and maximizes the number of real-time SIP sessions that can be delivered and carried, and improves the overall efficiency of the network. It integrates with SIP components such as application layer gateway (ALG) and SLA monitor that control and monitor SIP sessions between leading SIP proxies, network gateways and SIP devices.

U4EA’s GoS 2.0 embeddable software is integrated with a software based network device via a simple operating system (OS)-specific interface layer. Interface layers for common OSs are available from U4EA Technologies. The embeddable software module has a management API which makes GoS easy to use: the network controller simply has to specify the packet flows and their required quality characteristics – complex buffer allocations or queue specifications are totally eliminated with this QoS solution.

The GoS 2.0 Software Suite consists of three main modules that link together to provide a complete quality solution. The QoS Processing Core slots into the packet path and provides packet SLA enforcement. The QoS Configurator configures the core architecture according to the customer’s preferred quality model. The QoS Monitor supports real-time statistics gathering, charting, report generation and quality predictions for SLA management. All modules can be customized to meet specific customer requirements. Additionally, OEM customers can use ready-made packages for the common scenarios of VoIP support, DiffServ compliance or redundant link fail-over.

U4EA’s Unique GoS Architecture

The embeddable GoS 2.0 software module is a compact, versatile and portable implementation of U4EA’s unique Guarantee of Service (GoS) network resource contention management architecture. GoS combines all the benefits of conventional QoS algorithms such as WRED and CBWFQ with stable and predictable behavior and ease of use.

GoS is a state-of-the-art QoS solution that permits the independent control of loss and delay. In GoS, queuing mechanisms are composed in a modular architecture, ensuring GoS is flexible enough to be applied in different packet handling systems. GoS is also uniquely able to provide predictions of performance – users are assured of the future performance of their critical traffic, regardless of the behavior of other packet streams. This makes it the optimal choice for QoS management in converged network equipment that needs to handle a mix of real-time, business-critical and best-effort traffic.

Pricing and Availability

U4EA’s GoS 2.0 embedded software is available immediately to OEM design engineering teams. Licensing for the software is based on a 3% to 7% royalty of each device shipped.
