Roy Romer Uses District Money for Personal Legal Battles
Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District Roy Romer has retained the offices of Manatt, Phelps & Philips using school district money to fight a personal legal battle.
(PRWEB) October 30, 2004 -- Supertindendant Roy Romer has retained Manatt, Phelps & Philips, a high profile Los Angeles law firm, using Los Angeles Unified School District funds to pursue David Grant, a former LAUSD student.
See Federal Court, Central District (Case No. CV04-8893 DDP (MANx)).
David Grant was injured in 1995 when a split rim tire exploded during a class he was attending at an LAUSD school. The explosion severed Mr. Grant's left leg above the knee, and caused severe damage to his right leg, which required a series of complex surgeries, and a seven week hospital stay.
David Grant was deemed an employee of the school district by the California Supreme Court and was forced to use the worker's compensation system to obtain medical treatment for his injuries.
Since 1995, Mr. Grant has had to fight some absurd legal battles to get the simplest of medical claims paid for or reimbursed. In the most recent case, it took the school district two years to reimburse a Santa Monica doctor who produced a prosthesis for Mr. Grant.
"Mr. Romer pitched the story of the web site to the media, but he forgot some very important details, like how the self insured district loves to habitually practice bad faith" says Mr. Grant.
"Don't believe it? Just go to the web site and see for yourself. Go to www.royromer.com, the legal documents related to my nine year nightmare are all there, and there are more showing up every day!"
"Every student should be aware of this case, because when injured at school, this will happen to you, and my story proves it, and it is backed up with legal documentation and cold hard facts".
"Mr. Romer and his cronies would have you believe that I am the villian here, when nothing could be farther from the truth."
"Mr. Romer's legal battle is his, not the school district's, and he should not be using school funds to pursue the termination of a web site that promotes the truth to my fellow Californians."
