Boutique Hotel Brings Fun-and-Lively Lodging Alternative to Pacific NW

The Jupiter Hotel, an 80-room boutique hotel with an individual sense of style is the first new hotel to open in LoBu (lower Burnside), one of Portland’s revitalized arts and cultural neighborhoods, close to downtown and the Portland Convention Center. The Jupiter’s guest rooms and public spaces employ an innovative mix of retro and contemporary design with an added sense of fun and games. And with daily rates from $79-$109, the Jupiter offers affordable, stylish accommodations in an urban setting.

Under the ownership of partners Kelsey Bunker and Tod Breslau, the Jupiter Hotel has been creatively designed not only as a boutique hotel, but also as a communal gathering place. “I felt it was important that the Jupiter have a distinct personality, embodied by the artistic spirit of the neighborhood, and also be visually stimulating and enticing,” says Bunker. “I want our guests to feel they are discovering something fresh behind every door.”

Chalkboard Doors Entice the Artist Within:

The Jupiter’s outdoor courtyard with small clusters of chairs, bamboo gardens, and a communal fireplace invites guests to meet and mingle. Chalkboard doors on each guestroom give the more creative clientele an empty canvas and add to the overall “artistic” vibe of the Jupiter. At night the two-story building glows with accents of cobalt colored lighting transforming the urban space into a “resort” oasis. A creative meeting and retreat space is planned to accommodate 100 people and will be equipped with the latest in audiovisual capabilities.

Cool, Affordable Design:

The Jupiter’s guestrooms and suites are decorated in a contemporary style with subtle colors while recalling the design trends of the 1960s. Architect Jeff Kovel, founder and principal of Skylab Design Group collaborated with Bunker and Breslau to create inviting and relaxing guestrooms that combine sleek, modern elements with an added surprise or two. “This is not your typical hotel room,” says Breslau, also owner of the furniture store Sofa, Table, Chair in Portland, OR. “We added whimsical touches like foam green shaggy pillows and rugs.” Breslau worked with Minneapolis-based modernist furniture company, Blu Dot to choose the abstract and functional guestroom furniture featuring platform beds, and tubular steel and maple tables. Two-bedroom “creative suites” will also be available for long-term stays with high-speed Internet, satellite TV, and room service from the nearby Doug Fir Restaurant. All of the guestrooms and suites have a private bathroom.

Music and Munchies at The Doug Fir:

Located adjacent to the Jupiter Hotel is the new Doug Fir Restaurant, Bar and Lounge offering regional Northwest cuisine mixed with one of Portland’s newest underground music venues. Co-owned and designed by architect Jeff Kovel, John Plummer, and Mike Quinn of Monqui Productions, Portland’s premier concert promoter, the Doug Fir combines a post-modern diner with a lounge and music club featuring both national and local acts. The Doug Fir provides hotel guests with room service and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information, please visit http://www.dougfir.com.
