For 25 years these two mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), consulting design engineers have partnered and are known throughout New York and the tri-state area to be a son and father team that are dedicated to formulating new, people and environment friendly engineering concepts. In celebration of their quarter of a century together this press release will be one in a series on their most innovative contributions to building design in NY and the metro area.

Astor Place is a magnificent high-end residential cooperative at 445 Lafayette Street in Manhattan that Ettinger Engineering Associates is proud to be an integral part. What is most unique about the project from the engineering standpoint is the use of an Absorption Chiller Heater method to heat and cool the building.

This type of system provides comfort for the tenants by performing more quietly. Traditionally boilers and air conditioning units are utilized, however at Astor Place these are being replaced by two York Absorption Chiller Heaters that will run all year round and cool and heat the building in all four seasons. The unit feeds Air Handling Units and Fan Coil Units in the apartments and public spaces to eliminate the use of compressors thereby operating more quietly. In case of extreme winter conditions, or where extra heat might be needed, Ettinger Engineering has included supplementary Aerco high efficiency condensing type boilers and pumps in the design. An added bonus for the building maintenance is that Absorption Chiller Heater Systems are much easier to maintain.

The developer of Astor Place is The Related Companies, L.P. Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects designed the building and interior finishes. Ismael Leyva Architects designed the interior layouts.
