Birminghams Hotspots Unveiled

Internet Professionals Society of Alabama and TechBirmingham Unveil First Master List of Birmingham Wi-Fi Hotspots

(PRWEB) November 5, 2004 -- Move over coffee shops, youre not the only hotspot any more. Burger joints and tire shops are now getting in on the act.

Public hotspots, or Wi-Fi access points, are locations that provide Internet access while customers are at coffee shops, bookstores, hotels and brand-name copy centers. In the Birmingham area hotspots are also available throughout St. Vincent's Hospital, in the dining area at two Krystal restaurants and in the waiting room at Estes Warehouse Tires in Hoover.

You can find out where these nearly fifty hotspots are located through an online resource now published at www.ipsaonline.org/wifi. TechBirmingham, the advocate for technology in the Birmingham region, has partnered with Internet Professionals Society of Alabama ipsa to develop and maintain the list. The hotspot list was unveiled at the ipsa monthly user group meeting held at St. Vincent's Bruno Conference Center, which is also on the list. Members were able to view the list through a wireless connection at the luncheon.

We are excited that ipsa agreed to help increase public awareness of nearly fifty known hotspots in the metro area and then maintain the list which will surely grow over time," said Curtis Palmer, president of TechBirmingham. Birmingham already has a high density of fiber optics radiating from its city center to the outlying counties, and wireless is the next frontier. We are facilitating several other exciting wireless projects in the community and hope to have additional announcements in the coming months."

Scott Schram, President of ipsa, indicated that his organization's members will be advocating additional Wi-Fi access points throughout the Birmingham region. If a citizen knows of existing or planned public hotspots, the ipsaonline.org website includes a form where citizens and business owners can submit information to be included in updates to the dynamic list.
