The National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) was co-founded by NBC TODAY SHOW co-anchor and TV personality Katie Couric. NCCRA reports that, according to a 2002 University of Michigan research study, nearly 20% more colonoscopies (one type of colorectal cancer screening test) were performed in this country after her televised screening test - now known as the "Couric effect."

(PRWEB) November 7, 2004 -- Colorectal cancer occurs in the colon or rectum and is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer. It ranks second among cancer deaths in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Colorectal cancer usually originates in polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or the rectum. There are two types of polyps:

· Adenomatous polyps - pre-cancerous growths
· Hyperplastic polyps - benign growths

Over time, adenomatous polyps may develop into cancer. Both men and women can develop colorectal cancer, but the risk becomes greater after age 50. The NCI lists the following as symptoms of colorectal cancer:

· A change in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool
· A constant urge to have a bowel movement even after doing so
· Bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool
· Cramping or consistent stomach pain
