From the Full Disclosure Archives: Phony Sample Ballot and Paid Endorsements Confuse Voters

*Should phony sample ballot mailings be banned? *Should "for profit" mailers be stopped from using fake, implied endorsements by prominent and unwilling officeholders? *Should "for profit" campaign mailers be forced to disclose if they are paid advertisements? Part 2 of a 2 part Debate

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 6, 2004 -- In this part two of the Full Disclosure cable and Internet TV program, Craig Holman of the Center for Governmental Studies exposed phony sample ballots sent out by California Congresswoman Maxine Waters which were prepared by a for profit" slate card mailing operator, in an attempt to deceive voters. UCLA Law Professor Dan Lowenstein countered, saying that oppressive campaign laws were trying to discredit the mailings. He scoffed that if imitating an Official Sample Ballot is a problem, then it should be made illegal.

If you take away the deceptiveness of a slate card, you take away the effectiveness of a slate card" said Senator Dick Mountjoy (ret). Mountjoy cited the deceptive mailers targeting senior citizens in his Southern California district. He said the slate cards mailings used his image and name to falsely imply that he had endorsed the candidates. In fact the candidates had paid for the false endorsements.

This part two of the debate moderated by Leslie Dutton on the Emmy Award winning Full Disclosure was originally videotaped in 1998 and is set to air world-wide on the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week starting on Monday, Nov 8, 2004 at http://www.fulldisclosure.net/Program_Details/Archive_239_phony_sample_ballots.htm
