John Buoniconti is a man with a mission. John is the cofounder and president of Big John's Team. This is a nonprofit organization created in memory of his parents. When John was almost 8 years old, his mother lost her 6 year fight with cancer. Then, less than two years later, he lost his father after a two year fight with lung cancer. This not only made John an orphan, but also left him wondering why his parents were taken from him at such a young age. Growing up, John participated in cancer fundraising events like bowling tournaments for St. Judes Children's Hospital, and charity walks for The American Cancer Society.
Then in August of 2001, John's life was changed again. While participating in a 3 day, 60 mile walk to support beast cancer research, he found is reason for being. He was walking in 105 degree heat, on a dusty county road, and it hit him. John realized that he was here to help others that are going through what he and family went through. He was here to help give cancer patients the means to get the treatments they needed to survive, and restore the feeling of hope in their lives.
Big John's Team has had a variety of successful fundraisers since it's creation in September of 2001. They have given over $25,000 to seven different beneficiaries. At the moment, BJT has annual events in Colorado and Massachusetts.
For John, that was a great start, but his goals are much higher. He wants to help uninsured and underinsured cancer patients in every state. So, after years of planning, his big dreams have resulted in the creation of, The BIG WALK.
This is a national fundraiser that will have local impact. John is leaving his full time paying job, selling his car, and leaving his home to personally walk 16,000 miles in three years. John is going to walk through all 48 states and DC. He has gotten support from his presenting sponsor Event 360, an event logistics company. He has also managed to get Brooks Sports to come on board and supply him with shoes for the entire event. He has gotten several other key in-kind sponsors to supply him with event T-shirts and fliers. While he is gaining support with each passing month, he is still in need of many more monetary sponsors. He will in return put his sponsors names and logo's on the events website event T-shirts, event fliers and the support RV which will follow John along his trek. Individual contributors will be able to specify the state account that their donation will go to, thus allowing BJT to help cancer patients in every state.
