Psychiatrist Says To Alleviate the Overweight Pandemic, Americans Must Change the Way They Think

Characterizing the increasing size of the country's waistline as a pandemic, Psychiatrist Dr. Anthony J. Burlay stresses the importance of changing the American attitude toward food in his new book, "The Foundation Diet: Your Body Was Designed to Eat."

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2004 -- Characterizing the increasing size of the country's waistline as a pandemic, Psychiatrist Dr. Anthony J. Burlay stresses the importance of changing the American attitude toward food in his new book, "The Foundation Diet: Your Body Was Designed to Eat" (Zen-fusion Publishing, $22.95).

"Losing weight is easy," he says "but you must understand how your body works and change your behavior if you want results, and want to keep your results– that's the difficult part."

In his new book Dr. Burlay explains that to lose weight and keep it off, you must:

  • Understand how your body was designed to eat;
  • Set reasonable goals and stay the course; and
  • Change more complex patterns of thought and behaviors.

"Your body has evolved to eat a certain type of diet," he says. "By altering attitudes, educating yourself about how humans should eat, and making some strategic changes, you can lose weight- permanently."

The Foundation Diet integrates a way of eating "designed by evolution" with sound medical and archeological evidence, as well as psychological support. Recipes included in the book are far from what you may think our ancestors ate, but Dr. Burlay points out that a diet rich in variety and imagination is essential to keep us on track. He emphasizes that it is entirely possible to dine on gourmet-type foods, while still eating the way nature intended humans to eat, and lose weight.

"Today we eat an incorrect balance of foods for how our bodies are designed," Dr. Burlay says. We make things more difficult for ourselves because "we associate foods with emotional events, feel addicted to foods, and even attach a moral component to eating."

Coupled with the motivation and therapeutic support The Foundation Diet provides, Dr. Burlay hopes to revolutionize the way people think about food, their bodies, and their future. "Evolutionarily our bodies adapted and learned to be efficient in order to survive," says Dr. Burlay. "The Foundation Diet is the closest match to the long lost instruction manual for our metabolism."

The Foundation Diet is available at Amazon.com and major booksellers. For more information visit: www.foundationdiet.com.

Dr. Burlay is currently the Medical Director for a substance abuse residential rehabilitation treatment program in Maryland. He earned his M.D. and completed his Psychiatric Residency at the University of Maryland, and became Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Addictions Psychiatry. He earned his B.A. from the University of Maryland, graduating Cum Laude. He has lost and kept off over 50 pounds following The Foundation Diet.
