Piribo - Development of COX-2 Inhibitors Continues

Learning from the fallout from Vioxxs withdrawal.

(PRWEB) November 15, 2004 -- Within 24 hours of Merck's announcement that it would withdraw Vioxx from the market, approximately 2.4% of the 1.2 million Vioxx prescription holders in the US had received new prescriptions for alternative therapies, says a new report available from Piribo, the online destination for business intelligence for the biopharma industry.

The report COX-2 Inhibitors - Biology, Therapeutic Agents & Markets" says that of those active prescriptions, 58% had moved to other drugs within the COX-2 inhibitor therapeutic class, while 33% received a prescription for a NSAID such as naproxen. Among competitive COX-2 products, prescriptions for Pfizer's Celebrex and Bextra increased 78%, while prescription strength NSAID dispense rates increased 17% for the same three-day time period. Of current US Vioxx prescription holders 32% had taken the drug for more than 18 months, the timeframe in which Merck cited that individuals would be at risk for increased cardiovascular events.

However, despite the withdrawal of Vioxx (Rofecoxib) from the market in September 2004, considerable activity continues to be reported relating to the development of COX-2 inhibitors. Future priorities will be to demonstrate the safety of COX-2 inhibitors as a drug class; to better understand past problems and; to optimize future agents both with respect to traditional indications (inflammation/hyperalgesia) and the next wave of novel applications including Alzheimer's disease and chemoprevention.

This report was written to help all involved in the drug development sector to understand the biology surrounding the COX-2 inhibitor class and the (pre)clinical profiles of COX-2 inhibitors in advanced development or on the market. The report places a particular focus on the efficacy and adverse effects of these agents and offers a non-biased and critical evaluation of existing data. The report also provides a detailed evaluation of the COX-2 inhibitor market with revenue forecasts to 2010

COX-2 Inhibitors - Biology, Therapeutic Agents & Markets" provides a detailed scenario analysis forecasting major events over the next 6 years and predicts that following a transient increase in sales in 2004 due to prescription switching, the market will contract in 2005. By 2006 growth will begin to return as second generation products gain broader indications and Prexige becomes established in the European markets. The report forecasts sales of the major COX-2 inhibitors over the next 6 years globally, in the US and outside of the US.
