They say that what doesnÂt kill you will make you stronger. That certainly seems to be the case with Fortis Software (http://www.fortissoftware.com), a young guns software development firm based out of the Tampa / Clearwater area in Florida.
Of interest is how, with so much offshoring to India over the last few years, has Fortis managed to create 80-100% growth during each of the last four years? After meeting with them, I found more than a few good reasons that might explain this.
First, the company was co-founded by wunderkind Paul McDaniel. Just a teenager when he began programming for Microsoft, he concluded an 11 year career where he largely contributed to a long list of milestone projects, including MS C++, SMS, MSN, ASP, WMI, IIS, and .NET. Turns out he is also credited with inventing ASP Scripting and other technologies that have his name on the patent.
ÂMany think it was a purely honorable purpose to take part in the boom of a technical hot bed developing in Florida. The behind the scenes story is that many of my best friends followed me from Redmond so that we could fly to Key West and snorkel, surf during the hurricanes and do things during our play time that we just couldnÂt do in Seattle, says McDaniel. After assuring me that he is pulling my leg (but admits he really is a pilot), he explains, ÂI really believe that the uncommon experience of our engineering and dev team gives us the ability to create commercial grade products that most early-stage technology clients and Independent Software Vendors (ISV's) simply cannot get anywhere else.Â
In addition to their technical prowess, Fortis has invented a new, blended services model for the industry that sets them apart from any other software development shop. Specifically, Fortis offers their clients the ability to go beyond world-class software development  as a turn-key provider that includes technical staffing and product marketing consulting services.
ÂWe like to develop high quality software under aggressive development schedules. Fortis team of experienced programmers not only writes A+ software code, but they are invaluable at proposing unique solutions to difficult product and market problems, says Ron Franczyk - Co-Founder and President of Giant Company Software. ÂWhy would a company risk trying to save a few dollars coding in India when they could use a provider like Fortis?Â
This concept was spearheaded by their CEO, Lance Imburgia, and co-founder / president, Uri Minkoff. Their purpose was to expand the companyÂs capabilities, through strategic acquisition, and with proven teams, to assist their clients from the earliest stages of product concept - all the way through to successful sales and adoption in the market place.
What I found most interesting is that when I learned of how these services all dovetail together, to address issues that many of their clients need and want help with, it made me wonder why this hasnÂt already been done before. As a result, thereÂs little doubt that companies like Fortis Software are evolving a new standard and raising the bar not only for themselves and their area, but for an industry as a whole.
With a pendulum that is already starting to swing away from offshoring, perhaps a new era of Ânear-shoring is just around the corner.
