San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 16, 2004 -- Meals on Wheels (www.mowsf.org) -- the San Francisco nonprofit that delivers hope" along with two meals a day to more than 1,100 homebound San Francisco seniors -- gives their drivers a day off on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day when volunteers, staff and board members take to the trucks. This year, over 200 volunteers are pitching in to deliver meals to homebound senior men and women on November 25 and December 25. Volunteers will deliver hot turkey dinners, candy, and flowers. Even the seniors pets will be remembered with toys, treats, and pet food.
Weve been organizing special holiday deliveries for thirteen years," said Sima Dahi, Meals on Wheels Executive Officer. For most of us the holiday season is a time for joyful gatherings with family and friends, occasions when food plays a special role in our celebrations. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky -- for thousands of frail homebound seniors in San Francisco, the holidays are just a reminder of their loneliness and vulnerability. The holidays are our busiest time, and we ensure that our seniors are given special attention."
Volunteer Colin Benoit, who volunteered last Thanksgiving, said It was rewarding to be able to make such a direct impact on another persons life. When I handed the flowers to the seniors on my route, and set out their meals, they were so touched and happy."
Dedicated to serving meals and social services to homebound seniors, Meals on Wheels will celebrate their 35th year in San Francisco beginning with a holiday party this December 9, and culminating with a Gala fundraising benefit in late May 2005. Meals on Wheels delivers two meals per day to over 1,100 homebound seniors, and a warm lunch each day to 200 more seniors at the Dorrwin Jones Senior Center. Among Meals on Wheels clients are 126 seniors over 90 years of age.
