The American Cancer Society, one of the nations’ largest voluntary, non-profit health agencies, turned to NetPlus Marketing and Singularity Design to leverage the power of the world wide web to promote the Great American Smokeout on November 18, 2004. The Society’s website, http://www.cancer.org/livefreesmokefree features the Smokeout Café game, specially designed for the Great American Smokeout, and can be played by clicking here: (http://www.nynjevents.org/site/PageServer?pagename=SmokeoutCafeGame).

The site and game are sponsored by the Society’s Eastern Division, which includes New York State and New Jersey.

“The American Cancer Society came to NetPlus for an effective way to promote their LiveFree.SmokeFree™ website by capitalizing on the Internet’s ability to engage users and achieve a viral distribution,” said Robin Neifield, CEO, NetPlus Marketing, a top 50 Interactive Agency. “An online game is a powerful way to connect the message with a wide array of people and encourage them to tell their friends about it.”

Jeff Greenhouse, founder of Singularity Design, the firm that created the Macromedia Flash-based game added, “Our goal was to create a concept that would promote the Great American Smokeout and the LiveFree.Smokefree™ wrist bands, and persuade people to stop smoking in an engaging, entertaining manner. The resulting game allows players to fling the wrist bands to knock down cigarettes that are running along counters, sliding down banisters, and hiding behind objects in a 3D coffee shop.”

In addition to the game, the LiveFree.SmokeFree™ website lets users follow seven quitters’ stories, order a wrist band, send an e-card and join the American Cancer Society’s action network.

Donald Distasio, Chief Executive Officer, American Cancer Society, Eastern Division, shares his thoughts, "The American Cancer Society relies on the generosity and expertise of corporations to further its reach into our communities. The innovative design work of Singularity and the marketing expertise of NetPlus were integral to the success of our Livefree.Smokefree website. Due in large part to the popularity of the Smokeout Café game, our promotional supply of wrist bands -- which we expected to last a month or more -- was exhausted in less than a week! It has been successful beyond our expectation and couldn't have happened without Singularity and NetPlus working with us to help spread the message of the Great American Smokeout."
