Beware of the Holiday Blues the Holiday Season is in Full Swing and While it's Commonly Thought of as a Time of Good Cheer and Merry-making, Many People Experience Seasonal "Blues." The Policy Store and Unicare Life and Health Bring this Notice to You.
The "holiday blues" affect women and men, young and old. Some of the factors that may cause the "blues" include, fatigue, unrealistic expectations, financial challenges, recent loss, inability to be with family, house guests, increased demands of shopping and the general hype that surrounds the commercialization of the season.
(PRWEB) November 25, 2004 -- Common stress reactions resulting from "holiday blues", as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, include headaches, excessive alcohol consumption, over-eating or not eating enough and difficulty sleeping.
According to the Mental Health Association of Colorado, many people become depressed during the holiday season. However, even more experience the "blues" as a result of a post-holiday letdown. The combination of emotional disappointments experienced prior to the holidays, and the physical reactions to stress and fatigue experienced during the holidays, create an opportune environment for developing "post-holiday blues." So lets make it a Great Holiday and loose the stress and the Blues!
If you get caught up in the "blues":
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Do not feel obligated to be festive, especially if you have experienced a recent loss.
- Don't compare this holiday with past holidays. Look to the future while making the most of the present.
- Enjoy activities that are free, such as driving around to look at holiday decorations, listening to music or window shopping.
- Try something new by celebrating the holidays in a different way.
- Spend time with people who are supportive and care about you and or make a new friend.
- Make time for yourself.
If you want to support someone experiencing the "blues":
- Be a good listener. Sometimes people just need to be heard. Let them know that you are there for them.
- Be aware that the holidays can be difficult for people when they don't measure up to their expectations. Help them appreciate what they do have instead of what is lacking.
- Encourage the person to get involved in holiday activities.
- Familiarize yourself with mental health resources, counseling centers and hotlines in your area that may offer assistance to people in need.
This is information that is good to know if for no other reason than make us aware that someone near them may be feeling less than jolly and joyous! So Knowing may be a way to help make this a very special Holiday.
