Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture (University of California Press) has just won the Prix d'Or, the top honors for best food magazine at the 2004 Gourmet Voice World Food Media Awards, placing it in the company of such culinary luminaries as Alice Waters, Ferran Adria, and JoÃ«l Robuchon. Rachael Ray was nowhere to be found.
Earlier this week nearly a thousand journalists, writers, publishers, chefs, critics, and photographers from 70 countries converged on Cannes, France, to attend the Gourmet Media World Festival. These trendsetters, influencers and decision-makers came to honor the best international gourmet media entries selected by an international jury.
Now approaching its fifth birthday, Gastronomica is the realized dream of Darra Goldstein, who had a vision for a journal that would offer food enthusiasts from all fields a place to present new thoughts and findings. Goldstein was also aware of the frustrations of popular food writers who have to write about life style rather than explore the issues around food that affect our lives.
"I wanted to create a magazine that would use food for thought, that would cause people to think seriously, widely, and deeply about what goes onto their plates, without losing sight of the pleasure of food," she notes.
The result is an eclectic journal with a rich variety of academic investigations, accessible features and luscious imagery worthy of this extraordinary recognition.
