Gifts On A Budget Get A Downloadable Twist

It's always difficult to find a gift that is heartfelt and affordable. "Not any more," says Tom Hanus, who wants people to "think art" when searching for gifts on a budget. Hanus is president of, an online art gallery that has made its collection of 12 holiday art prints downloadable for $9.99 each. The Holiday Collection includes inspirational, scenic and romantic art prints normally sold for $19.99 plus shipping.

"Downloads began as something you did to get software, then to get books and then to get music," says Hanus who reasoned downloadable art was the next logical step with improvements in home printers and inks.

The prints are normally shipped at 11" x 14" but the downloadable versions will print as 8" x 10" and are set up to print on home inkjet printers set on best quality. Once printed, the art fits into ready-made photo frames. Photo frames already are a popular gift item, sold through more than 37,000 gift shops as well as department, discount and convenience stores. Many of those frames can now be given with a piece of art.

"It's part-purchase and part-DIY. You add a personal element that takes the gift to the next level," says Hanus. "Write a short note on the bottom and slip it into a frame. For under $20 total you create an expensive-looking, personalized gift that will be remembered." The user agreement allows a buyer to print the image up to five times for personal use, so real budget stretchers can create five gifts from one purchase.

The gallery's theme is "touch the heart with a gift of art" and its Holiday Collection is filled with rich, vibrant colors. Inspirational prints include "Footbridge Reflections" and "Glorious Rising." Scenic pieces include a Napa vineyard and a seagull silhouetted against an oceanfront sunset. Enduring love is the romantic feeling behind the candle and rose duo in "You and I."

While downloading art for framing may be a new twist, the gallery believes the service will grow in popularity. "Some will want it for value. Others may be procrastinating and need a gift that doesn't look last-minute," says Hanus.
