What is International Modem Dialing?

International modem dialing, which has other names, is one of the top ten Internet frauds according to the Federal Trade Commission. Many people know of the practice, but they dont know the exact name. This fraud consists of a dialer that is knowingly or unknowingly downloaded, then it connects the users computer to another server, usually in another country. The result is a premium telephone charge.

(PRWEB) November 26, 2004 -- No, this isn't about cheap international calls made from your computer. This about expensive calls made from your computer, without your knowledge or consent. The cause of the international modem dialing fraud is a secret dialer program installed on a users computer. The perpetrators use several means of delivering the dialer to the users computer, such as offering something for free like downloadable games, but more recently clicking on E-mail will also install the dialer.

Most sites that track Internet fraud have a full description of this practice and give advice on how you can protect yourself from it. However, their advice relies on human behavior, which can be haphazard at best. This advice includes listening to the modem dialing when it shouldnt or being alert to a window opening slowly when it shouldnt. Because of this advice, they are remiss in not mentioning that there is a software solution to the problem.

ReconnectWarning is among several other programs which addresses this fraud. The program intercepts numbers that the modem tries to dial and gives the user the option of connecting or blocking the connection. Other programs have several settings and some have settings that need some coding experience. Some also have other features that are duplicated by programs that are already on the users computer. Unlike the other programs, ReconnectWarning is easy to use; there is only one setting for each authorized telephone number. Another benefit is that, since it has only one function, the price is low at $10 per copy.

One problem is that many users are complacent about this fraud until they become a victim and by that time the fraudsters have won one more time. We would like to request readers to tell family and friends about the availability of a software solution, and especially of ReconnectWarnings merits. If enough users are made aware that protection is available for this scam, it may be possible to eliminate this kind of fraud and that is one reason this program has a low price.
