WWW.DVDVCDPLAZA.COM has put for online sale Ritwik Ghatak classic 'Meghe Dhaka Tara' (The Cloud Capped Star) in VCD.

(PRWEB) November 29, 2004 -- WWW.DVDVCDPLAZA.COM has put for online sale Ritwik Ghatak classic 'Meghe Dhaka Tara' (The Cloud Capped Star) in VCD. Ghatak's 79th birth anniversary saw the release of the Meghe Dhaka Tara VCD (Rs 299), the first in the Ghatak series, to be followed by Subarnarekha, Komalgandhar and Nagarik, his first feature film. Meghe Dhaka Tara was first released in 1960 and Ghatak has written somewhere that he considiered this film to be his creative best.

Meghe Dhaka Tara is perhaps Ritwik Ghatak's greatest and most complete film, the first in a trilogy examining the socio-economic implications of partition, the other two being Komal Ghandhar (1961) and Subarnarekha (1965).

WWW.DVDVCDPLAZA.COM is releasing this pioneer film online on VCD for the first time after its hall release in 1960 and making it available for sale to the film-lovers worldwide. The film was released by Ghatak's colleague and eminent filmmaker Mrinal Sen in Nandan. The VCD has been produced by Maxtech Entertainment from Kolkata.

Need one say anything more other than, just get off your seat and grab the VCD.

Synopsis:
Meghe Dhaka Tara tells the story of Nita, a woman who sacrifices her life to rebuild her family shattered by the effects of Partition and subsequent exodus. In its intensity of approach, its complex use of sound and its deliberate but artistic use of melodrama, the film remains a pioneer in the Indian Cinema. Nita (Supriya Chowdhury) is the breadwinner in a refugee family of five. Her elder brother, Shankar (Anil Chatterjee) aspires to be a classical singer. Nita postpones her marriage to the scientist Sanat (Niranjan Roy) to support the family and pay for her younger brother's and sister's studies. The father and younger brother both suffer accidents forcing Nita to remain the sole breadwinner of the family in spite of her worsening tuberculosis. Her mother encourages Sanat to marry the younger sister Gita (Gita Ghatak). Finally, Shankar having realized his ambition takes her to the hills for treatment. There terminally ill, having sacrificed her best years, Nita cries out into the silence of the mountains her desire to live....

Operating on a position totally different to that of Satyajit Ray (with whom, however, he shared the same classical humanist background) for whom the development of a story with its minutest details and careful study of characters was most important, Ritwik was more bent on epic Indian approach. Meghe Dhaka Tara, unlike his other films, was also a commercial success. His other films however were not so fortunate.

Lastly, the film is greatly helped by an absolutely stunning performance by Bengali Filmstar Supriya Chowdhury as Nita. Meghe Dhaka Tara is one of the rare instances when she was successfully able to break her star image and cover new ground as a performer.
