Tension Headache and Migraine Prescription Medications Tramadol, Fioricet, Amitriptyline, Imitrex and Naproxen Joined by a New Product in the Battle to Find a Treatment for Headache Sufferers
While several muscle relaxers such as Skelaxin and Soma are at times also prescribed a new product named Trexima is under development.
(PRWEB) December 10, 2004 -- Trexima is a new combination therapy for migraines in development by GlaxoSmithKline and Pozen. GlaxoSmithKline and Pozen partnered on the drug in June 2003. GlaxoSmithKline is expected to file a new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration for Trexima in 2005. GlaxoSmithKlines migraine drug Imitrex is scheduled to lose patent protection in 2008.
Trexima is a co-formulation of Imitrex and Naproxen using GlaxoSmithKline's and Pozens proprietary rapid-release technology. Trexima works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for the production of prostaglandins, which are the mediators of pain and inflammation, thereby enhancing the speed, effectiveness and duration of migraine symptom relief.
In May 2004, Pozen and GlaxoSmithKline announced the start of the Phase III program for Trexima. Pozen will conduct two Phase III pivotal trials designed to determine the effectiveness and safety of Trexima for the acute treatment of migraine. In addition, Pozen will conduct a long-term, open label safety study.
As many as 45 million Americans suffer from headaches. Tension-type and migraine headaches are the most common, and cluster headache is the rarest. It is important to seek medical care for headaches because, if treated correctly, more than 85% of headaches will respond to treatment.
