Xlear, Inc., a leading manufacturer of xylitol products, today announced that its SpryTM Infant Tooth Gel has been recognized as a 2004 Top 100 product by Dental Products Report (DPR), a leading dental industry publication. The tooth gel was recognized in DPR’s annual “Trends in Dentistry” issue published in December. Over the course of a year, DPR features an average of 1,000 new products. The Top 100 products are determined by the response they generate from the publication’s readers and their innovation as determined by the publication’s editors.

“When our Infant Tooth Gel appeared in DPR earlier this year, we were very impressed with the response we received from dentists across the country,” said Brent McKinley, vice president of corporate development for Xlear. “Xylitol-based products continue to grow in popularity as more people learn about the unique dental benefits of the natural sweetener. Our Spry Dental Defense System, which includes the tooth gel, is a growing line of xylitol-rich dental products, which can help combat bacteria in the mouth and help prevent cavities.”

Spry Infant Tooth Gel is an all-natural gel used for application on the teeth and gums of infants and toddlers. The gel is sweetened with 100 percent xylitol, an all-natural sweetener found in fruit, vegetables and birch trees. Clinical studies have shown that when used as part of proper oral hygiene and dental care, xylitol can help reduce cavity-causing effects by as much as 80 percent.

In addition, xylitol has also shown to:

•    Inhibit the ability of cavity-causing, plaque-forming bacteria to adhere to teeth;

•    Reverse early cavity formation;

•    Reduce dental plaque formation;

•    Reduce gum tissue inflammation;

•    Reduce ear infections by up to 40 percent;

•    Reduce the amount of cavities in children when their mothers consistently used a Xylitol rich product during and after their pregnancy; and

•    Minimize tooth scarring and puffy gums that can occur during orthodontic treatment.

DPR is considered the product information leader of dental publications. More than 150,000 subscribers, most of which are U.S.-based dentists, rely on DPR to keep them up-to-date on what products are available. A recent blind survey shows that more than three-quarters of dentists find DPR the most useful and overall preferred publication for dental products, supplies and/or equipment.
