(PRWEB) December 21, 2004 -- digiSignage, a leader in digital signage media processor systems, announces the availability of the NMP network media processor, a breakthrough that will support the expansion of dynamic digital signage networks and enable more effective forms of digital signage applications.
Conventional digital signage systems today are built with PC-based systems driving 42-inch plasma displays (PDPs). This architecture faces a number of limitations in real-world deployments:
1. High equipment cost: conventional systems built with industrial PC which cost $500 to $1,000 per node depending on software options. This high cost has stopped many potential digital signage end users from adopting the technology and eliminates the possibility of personal messaging signs smaller 42 inches.
2. Low reliability: hard disk-based PC systems run software installed on hard disks which are not designed for 24-by-7 use. A typical hard disk with MTBF (mean-time-between-failure, a measure of system reliability) of 50,000 hours has a 50% chance of failing over a period of approximately 4 years in continuous use. With a digital signage network of just 100 nodes, it takes on average just 15 days to have one node fail due to a hard disk problem. After just a period of 3 months, it is 99% likely to find one node with a broken hard disk.
3. Lack of Scalability: when equipment cost per node is high, and reliability is low, the digital signage network becomes difficult to manage and scale even though business opportunities are plenty.
The digiSignage NMP media processor is a dedicated system built with the latest media processing and network management technology. Features include:
1. Low equipment cost: each NMP effectively replaces a computer, OS and player software. No extra software is needed to play all PC-playable media contents, including contents created by professional digital signage software such as the Scala InfoChannel. Low equipment cost opens up an entirely new market of small-size digital signage to carry out 1-to-1 focused marketing at every point-of-decision.
2. High reliability: the NMP is a complete solid-state system using flash memory for storage, replacing the fragile hard disk. Flash memory is typically rated with an MTBF of over 1,000,000 hours, and takes nearly 80 years to have a 50% chance of meeting one failure.
3. High scalability: when equipment cost is low, and reliability is high, digital signage networks built with the NMP media processor become manageable and scalable.
The NMP media processor is designed for digital signage network operators and advertisers who believe that cost, reliability and scalability are the critical issues. The NMP is compatible with Windows Media, plays Windows AVI, WMV, as well as MPEG-1/2/4 and contents created by Macromedia Flash, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Scala InfoChannel 3. The centralized management software Adfotain Central is based on a set of open API (application programming interface) to integrate with existing systems and effectively control the entire digital signage network from anywhere in the world.
Production has started for the NMP. Sample availability is scheduled for the end of Q1, 2005. Volume pricing starts at US$250 for quantity of 100 units. For further information, please contact digiSignage at sales@digiSignage.com.
