(PRWEB) December 25, 2004 -- Newcastle-based chartered surveyors Lamb and Edge has a history of commercial property sales stretching back to 1876.

With a diverse customer base extending from the Scottish Borders to the West Coast, the companys web site, launched in 2000, quickly became an essential way to communicate with new and existing customers.

Mike Cuthbertson, a partner at Lamb and Edge says: initially our web site was an online company brochure, but we realised it needed greater functionality if it was to become an effective marketing tool.

The next phase was to add a property search engine in order to engage our customers in a more targeted and interactive way".

The consultants that revised the site, also directed the company to funding opportunities from an online initiative called Grow Your Business (GROW) which is managed by n-e-life.com and supported by One NorthEast and ERDF*.

It's designed to help the regions businesses access the full potential of e-commerce, and is already helping SMEs across the region to make better use of Internet technology.

Along with the property search facility, online tools added to the Lamb and Edge site included a database and the ability to access web site statistics.

As the property search can accommodate hundreds of properties, a database provided the ideal solution for managing such large amounts of information.

Mike Cuthbertson says: the revised site represents a real shift in our ability to use the web more effectively.

"The new search engine database is simple, easy-to-use and allows customers to quickly locate what theyre looking for. Before the upgrade we were essentially 'flying blind but now that we can evaluate web statistics we know who our customers are, and what they want, which in turn enables us to provide a better service".

Norma Foster, general manager of n-e-life.com says: Lamb and Edge is a great example of how the GROW funding can help make businesses more successful through effective use of the Internet."

She adds that up to 80% funding packages are available for almost any IT project, not just web development. GROW is designed to help the regions SMEs prosper by making better use of IT software in all its forms. By taking advantage of funding, businesses in the North East can unlock the door to a whole host of business opportunities. Feedback from companies that have taken advantage of the initiative is extremely encouraging, and includes reduced costs, increased sales, and an ability to work more effectively."
